
East of the Cooper and along the tidal creeks, we replace more rusted dryer parts than anywhere else on our route. Marsh air carries enough salt to matter, and a dryer pulls hundreds of cubic feet of that air through itself every cycle. Here's what actually suffers — and what doesn't.
The vent hood goes first
The termination hood outside is the sacrificial part. Painted steel flappers rust at the hinge until they seize half-open (letting mice and palmetto bugs explore your duct) or rust shut entirely, choking the dryer. On homes in the Old Village, Shem Creek, and the island-adjacent streets, we now install plastic or stainless hoods by default — a ten-dollar difference that trebles the service life.
Inside the machine
Drums themselves are usually fine; they're stainless or coated and they run hot and dry. What corrodes inside is the hardware around the airflow path: screws on the blower housing, the heating element's terminals, and — on machines that sit in garages or breezeway closets — the cabinet's bottom edge where damp salt air condenses overnight. Terminal corrosion is the sneaky one: it raises resistance, the connection heats, and one day the dryer runs with no heat at all. The element tests fine; the spade connector is toast.
The gasket and the glass
Door gaskets on waterfront machines stiffen a season or two early. A leaking door seal bleeds hot air into the room and stretches dry times — subtle enough that most owners blame the machine's age. We check seals with the same care as elements, because a nine-dollar gasket has embarrassed a lot of expensive diagnoses.
What we do differently near the water
On marsh-front calls we treat corrosion as the default, not the exception: connectors get inspected and re-crimped, hoods get upgraded, and we note which parts are living on borrowed time so the next failure isn't a surprise. If you're within a mile or two of tidewater and your dryer is past its fifth birthday, a preventive once-over costs less than the emergency version of the same visit — and your towels will tell you the difference.
