Detergent bottles are dosed for national-average water. Charleston doesn't have national-average water — the municipal supply off the Edisto runs genuinely soft, and soft water makes detergent dramatically more effective. The result fills our call log every month: washers drowning in their own suds.
What oversudsing actually does
Foam looks like cleaning, but inside a front-loader it's a problem with a rap sheet. Suds cushion the tumble so clothes rub less and rinse worse, leaving residue that reads as “detergent isn't working” — which tempts people to add more. Suds strain the drain pump, which was built to move water, not meringue. And modern machines detect the foam and quietly add rinse cycles or halt with a suds-lock error, stretching a forty-minute wash toward two hours.
The residue spiral
Long term, undissolved detergent builds a film in the outer tub and door gasket that feeds mildew — the musty-gasket complaint has a chemistry component here, not just a humidity one. We clean plenty of gaskets, but the gasket that stays clean belongs to the household that fixed its dosing.
The fix costs nothing
Start at half the recommended dose of a high-efficiency detergent — genuinely half — and judge results by rinse water, not by foam. Most Charleston-area households land at a third to a half of the cap line with cleaner clothes than before. Skip the extra-detergent instinct on big loads; add agitation time instead. And pods: convenient, but they're a fixed dose in a soft-water town, which is why pod households see the most suds errors of all.
When it's not the soap
If a properly dosed machine still stops mid-cycle, throws suds errors, or leaves residue, the pressure sensor, drain path, or dispenser may be fouled from the oversudsing years — that buildup doesn't clear itself. That's a normal one-visit repair for us, and afterward the half-dose habit keeps it fixed.
