Old Charleston kitchens keep their gas ranges a long time — partly thrift, partly because a forty-year-old range is mechanically simple enough to keep fixing. But a range in a pre-war house doesn't stand alone: it's the visible end of a supply line, a shutoff, and a flex connector that may be older than everyone in the house. Our diagnosis starts behind the appliance, not on top of it.
The connection audit
First visit to an older kitchen, we look at what feeds the range: the shutoff valve (does it actually turn?), the flex connector (uncoated brass connectors from decades past are a known hazard and get flagged for replacement), and the fit of every joint, tested with detection fluid and instruments — never a guess, never a flame. Any smell of gas that lingers beyond ignition, recurs, or shows up with the range off means shut it down, ventilate, and call before cooking another meal. Vintage range, ordinary failures
Past the connection, old ranges fail in friendly ways. Surface igniters click forever when a boil-over soaked the electrode or the burner cap sits crooked. Oven igniters fade gradually — glowing but too weak to open the gas valve smartly, which reads as slow preheat or an oven that lights on its own schedule. Thermostats drift a genuine twenty-five degrees over the decades. All of it is measurable, and most parts for the common vintage platforms remain obtainable.
The keep-or-retire question
We assess safety first: valve condition, manifold tightness, insulation on any wiring the range carries, door seal. A sound old range is worth its modest repairs — many cook better than their replacements. One that fails the safety review gets the honest conversation, in writing, with the math. Sentiment counts in these kitchens; so does the detection fluid. We work in that order.
